Bharatpur

Bharatpur is popularly known for the most visited and famous Bird Sanctuary in India which is also being renowned as the world heritage site. A tour to Rajasthan is really incomplete without visiting Bharatpur which is the major site of attraction. Located in the Brij region, Bharatpur was once an impregnable, well-planned and fortified capital of Jat kingdom ruled by the Sinsinwar Maharajas. The threesome combination of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur has played a major role in the history of ancient India. The city is located just 55 kms away from Agra, the Taj Mahal city and the tourists who come to visit Agra also make a sure visit to Bharatpur to catch the varied species of avi-faunas in its bird sanctuary.

Founded in 1733, by Maharaja Suraj Mal, Bharatpur is a bastioned city named after Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama. Formerly known as Mewat, this place also houses the famous Bharatpur fort that was built in early 15th century.

Lohagarh Fort :

As the name suggests, this massive iron structure was built to defend the British attack in the 18th century. The layout of the fort was designed by the founder of Bharatpur, Maharaja Suraj Mal. The fort has three palaces within its complex- Kishori Mal, Mahal Khas, Kothi Khas. The fort has been now converted into a museum.

 

Government Museum :

The museum showcases artifacts, exquisitely carved sculptures and ancient inscriptions. This museum houses a rich collection of archaeological wealth of the nearby areas as well as from the old Bharatpur State. The museum is a perfect place for those who love cultural heritage.

 

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (Keoladeo Ghana National Park):

Most popularly being called as the world heritage site, the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is the only land in India that boasts around thousands of avi-faunas varieties in its perfect and protected region. Just 3 km away from the city, it is also one of the popular wildlife sanctuaries in India. It has around 400 species of water birds and is quite famous for the migratory birds specially the Siberian cranes. These cranes come here in July/Aug to spend winters in warmer climate and breeds till Oct/Nov.
